Powerful or Prideful
17 When the 72 followers came back from their trip, they were very happy. They said, “Lord, even the demons obeyed us when we used your name!” 18 Jesus said to them, “I saw Satan falling like lightning from the sky. 19 He is the enemy, but know that I have given you more power than he has. I have given you power to crush his snakes and scorpions under your feet. Nothing will hurt you. 20 Yes, even the spirits obey you. And you can be happy, not because you have this power, but because your names are written in heaven.” Luke 10:17-20 ERV
They were happy and filled with joy, and Jesus affirmed them, and reminded them of the best reason to be happy. You are forgiven, and your names are written in heaven. Salvation is the greatest miracle. No question, Jesus is teaching then a powerful lesson, just not rebuking them for being prideful.
Here is my point. If what I am saying is true. Then what did Jesus mean by saying, “I saw Satan fall like lightning…”? I believe He was rejoicing with the ones He sent. He was saying, as you were praying, preaching, healing the sick, and driving out the powers of darkness, I saw Satan being removed, displaced, and cast down from ruling over the city. Jesus is celebrating the victories of the Kingdom with them.
It is not prideful to know that Jesus made you powerful. As believers, Jesus sends us with His authority to displace and cast down the powers of darkness over our cities. In His name, we have the authority to remove the powers of darkness. In my opinion, the only one who would want us to misinterpret this verse is Satan. If we miss it, the dark stronghold stays, if we get it right, the dark stronghold must fall. Without Jesus you and I can do nothing, but with Him, we can walk in victory over the powers of darkness.
